The best way to choose software is to take into consideration your skill level when it comes to computers, the program you want or need, its purpose, who will be using it, and your budget.

If you buy a new computer, you might get it with Microsoft Office installed and can use it for free for a certain period of time. LibreOffice – an alternative to Microsoft Office is freeware and can be used without restriction.
GIMP – very similar to Adobe Photoshop, is also available for free and is used for High Quality Photo Manipulation, Artwork creation and Design of Graphic Elements.
A type of software that is considered free as the underlying code is open for anyone to use, modify, and redistribute as they please. Both LibreOffice and GIMP is in this category, as the code might be modified.

There is some confusion about the use of WordPress.Org – which is the open-source software that can be installed by your website hosting company and WordPress.com that is a hosted platform where you can build your website and have to pay a monthly fee.
