Software that can be used in your Company

The best way to choose software is to take into consideration your skill level when it comes to computers, the program you want or need, its purpose, who will be using it, and your budget.

Shareware

This is a type of software that is free to try and when you want to continue using it, you then have to pay for it. If you buy a new computer, you might get it with Microsoft Office installed and can use it for free for a certain period of time.  After the trial period has expired, you need to pay for it to continue using it.  Subscription is normally based on a selected period for e.g. 1 year and can then be renewed on an annual basis. The benefit of this type of subscription is that software updates are included in the package.

Other software that you might initially be able to use for free, is Camtasia studio – software for screen recording and video editing.

Adobe Photoshop – used to create graphics, photos and art, also have a 7 day free trial.

Freeware

This is a type of software that you can download on your computer and use it with no restrictions.  It is also free to share with others. It is how ever copyrighted and can not be changed.

LibreOffice – an alternative to Microsoft Office is freeware and can be used without restriction.

GIMP – very similar to Adobe Photoshop, is also available for free and is used for High Quality Photo Manipulation, Artwork creation and Design of Graphic Elements.

Open Source

A type of software that is considered free as the underlying code is open for anyone to use, modify, and redistribute as they please. Both LibreOffice and GIMP is in this category, as the code might be modified.

One of the most well known OpenSource products is WordPress, which is used to build this website and also by over 455 million other websites. 62% of the top 100 fastest growing companies in the US (Inc. 5000) use WordPress (read more about it on https://techjury.net/blog/percentage-of-wordpress-websites/)

There is some confusion about the use of WordPress.Org – which is the open-source software that can be installed by your website hosting company and WordPress.com that is a hosted platform where you can build your website and have to pay a monthly fee.
